Danza del león

Lion dance is a traditional dance form in Chinese culture and other Asian countries in which performers imitate the movements of a lion, where Kung Fu Choy Lee Fut schools participate every year, dressed up as the representation of this animal, to bring good luck and fortune. Lion dance is usually performed during Chinese New Year and other traditional, cultural and religious Chinese festivals. It can also be performed on important occasions such as business opening events, special celebrations or wedding ceremonies, or it can be used to honor special guests of Chinese communities.

Chinese lion dance is sometimes mistakenly referred to as dragon dance by most beginners. An easy way to tell the difference is that a lion is normally handled by only two dancers and has one tail, while a dragon is longer and is held by many people at the ends. The fundamental movements of Chinese lion dance can be found in Chinese martial arts.

There are two main forms of Chinese lion dance, the Northern Lion Dance and the Southern Lion Dance. Both forms are commonly found in China, but around the world, especially in Southeast Asia, the Southern Lion Dance is predominant, having been spread by Chinese diaspora communities, which are historically mostly of Chinese origin. Versions of the lion dance are also found in Japan, Korea, Tibet, and Vietnam. Another form of lion dance exists in Indonesian culture, but may be from a different tradition and may be referred to as Singa Barong.
